South Kolkata
The southern regions contain some of the renowned
learning centres of the city. There are also a number of lakes,
parks, stadia and clubs in this region. National Library,
Zoological Garden, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum,
Indian Association for the Cultivation of Sciences, Royal
Calcutta Golf Club, Tollygunge Golf Club, Kali Temple, etc.,
are some of the important tourist places in the southern precincts
of the city. The area also has a flourishing number of shopping
complexes. Dakhinapan Commercial Complex is the latest happening
place in the city.
East Kolkata
The eastern part of the Kolkata city is dominated by the township
of Salt Lake City. The region is characterized by salt lakes
and well planned residential blocks. The areas that fall in
the eastern region include Salt Lake City, Baguiati, Sealdah
and Tangra. Salt Lake City occupies great territorial area
and is evolving into an independent and self sufficient city.
This part of the city is divided into regular blocks and houses
most of the attractions in the region.
The eastern part of the city is provided with attractions
like major railway station (Sealdah Railway Station), Railway
Museum, amusement parks, stadium (the largest stadium of India),
wetlands (habitat for hundreds of rare birds), the China town
and renowned institutes like Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics,
Variable Energy Cyclotron and S N Bose Institute. The eastern
city suburbs have many established shopping centres and health
care units. Railways and roadways provide the means of accessibility
into the region. The Satin Sen Sarani road, that bifurcates
into Nazrul Islam Avenue and Canal Circular Road, constitute
the major road links in the region.
West Kolkata
The western suburbs of Kolkata city consist of areas
like Garden Reach, Watganj and Khidirpur. The western suburbs
are separated from Howrah west by the Hooghly river. The regions
in the western precincts are primarily industrial estates
and as such house a number of industrial units. Kolkata's
famous docks and shipyard building enterprises are located
in these regions. The west Eastern Railways connects the western
region with that of the city.
The western Kolkata has many manufacturing units installed
in there. The primary industrial output comprise of chemicals,
paints, metal plating and galvanizing. Besides being an industrial
area, the regions also support a great population. The western
suburbs are not as much developed as the other areas. The
region contains many slum areas with sub standard means of
living. However, the aid from world wide welfare organizations
have given a fillip to the developmental work in the region.
